Where does the name come from?
The name originated a while ago when several of us participated in a hackathon at UVA. We were building a tool to parse "Terms of Service" documents—a worthwhile endeavor that continues today, as one of the tools in our current collection serves this very purpose.
At the time, our perspective was that Terms of Service were often just "fine print" written by lawyers to impose limiting conditions, banking on the fact that most users would never read them.
While perusing these documents, we encountered a striking phrase in the 37signals terms of service: "You must be human." While the phrase wasn't inherently malicious, it gave us pause. It served as a reminder of what we are building with software and the importance of remembering that, even as technology advances, there are lines we shouldn't cross. We must stay human.
