About Full Fact

Full Fact is a UK-based independent fact-checking charity that combines journalistic rigor with custom-built technology to counter misinformation. Since 2010, the organization has been at the forefront of automated fact-checking, developing a suite of AI tools that help keep pace with the modern information environment. The system functions by collecting and monitoring data from news sites, live TV broadcasts, podcasts, and social media. Using a fine-tuned version of Google's BERT model, the software identifies "checkable claims"—sentences that make factual assertions about quantities, causes, or future events. These claims are then compared against a massive database of verified fact checks using a "Matching" model. If a match is found, the tool can immediately notify users that a debunked claim is being repeated. This "co-intelligence" between human fact-checkers and machines allows Full Fact to monitor public debate at a scale impossible for humans alone. The tools are used by over 40 organizations in 30 countries and are currently being expanded to help U.S. newsrooms handle election-related misinformation.
