About Safe City

Safecity is a crowdsourcing platform that empowers individuals to anonymously report incidents of sexual harassment and abuse in public spaces. Launched as a response to the 2012 gang rape in Delhi, the platform aims to make "the invisible visible" by documenting the spectrum of abuse—from verbal harassment and groping to physical assault—that often goes unreported in official crime statistics. When a user submits a report, the data is aggregated and visualized as "hot spots" on an interactive map, revealing patterns and trends in specific locations. This data serves as a powerful tool for community engagement and institutional accountability. Safecity collaborates with local police to optimize patrol timings, municipal authorities to improve street lighting, and transportation agencies to enhance public transit safety. Beyond reporting, the platform facilitates community workshops and "safety audits" to help residents reclaim public spaces. To date, Safecity has collected over 86,000 unique stories across more than 80 countries, directly reaching over 1 million people. It is a flagship program of the Red Dot Foundation, which works at the intersection of gender, technology, and urban planning to foster safe and equal access to cities for everyone.
