About EarthRanger

EarthRanger is a software solution designed to help protected area managers, ecologists, and wildlife biologists make informed operational decisions for conservation. Developed originally by Vulcan Inc. and now a product of the Allen Institute for AI (Ai2), the platform was created in response to the Great Elephant Census, which highlighted a severe decline in elephant populations due to poaching. EarthRanger collects, integrates, and displays real-time and historical data from various sources—including ranger patrols, animal collars, remote imaging, and over 70 types of hardware sensors. This information is presented in a single, unified view, allowing park managers to monitor animal movements, identify potential threats, and coordinate enforcement assets efficiently. Since its initial deployment in 2016, the technology has been used in over 100 sites across 30 countries to safeguard endangered species and their habitats. The platform functions as a "force multiplier" for security operations while also assisting in the mitigation of human-wildlife conflict. Because it is accessed via a standard web browser, it requires no advanced IT experience to operate in the field. All data logged into EarthRanger is owned by the end user, ensuring local organizations maintain control over their conservation data.
