Global Fishing Watch is a free online platform that provides unprecedented transparency into global commercial fishing activity. A collaboration between Oceana, SkyTruth, and Google, it utilizes satellite data and machine learning to track and share information about the movements of more than 65,000 commercial fishing vessels. By processing billions of Automatic Identification System (AIS) messages, the platform's AI identifies vessel types and detects specific fishing behaviors in real-time. This technology empowers governments, researchers, and NGOs to identify illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, monitor marine protected areas, and promote sustainable ocean management policies globally.
