Lazarillo
GPS navigation for the blind.
About Lazarillo
Lazarillo is a specialized GPS application designed to provide mobility tools and autonomy to individuals who are blind or have low vision. Created with active feedback from the visually impaired community, the app uses real-time audio messages to narrate the user’s surroundings, announcing nearby places, street names, and intersections as they move. Its primary features include Exploration mode, which provides context about the immediate environment, and Category Search, allowing users to find specific locations like banks, pharmacies, or transit stops. Lazarillo supports both indoor and outdoor navigation, partnering with businesses such as airports, shopping centers, and universities to create interactive digital maps of their facilities using Bluetooth beacons and Lidar technology. The app is free to download on iOS and Android and functions in the background, allowing users to receive audio cues while their phone is in their pocket. It serves as a vital companion for safe and independent urban exploration.
