About DataKind
DataKind is a global nonprofit organization that harnesses the power of data science and artificial intelligence in the service of humanity. Founded in 2012 at the beginning of the "Data for Good" movement, DataKind connects professional data scientists with social impact organizations to solve complex challenges in sectors such as health, climate, and economic resilience. The organization operates through two main programs: DataDives and DataCorps. DataDives are high-energy, 48-hour "marathons" where teams of volunteer technologists prototype solutions or conduct initial data exploration for multiple partner nonprofits. DataCorps projects are long-term engagements (3–12 months) where small teams of pro bono experts work deeply with a partner to build robust, scalable digital tools and machine learning models. DataKind also maintains "Thematic Portfolios" which identify common problems across the sector to create "digital public goods"—open-source solutions that can be reused by multiple organizations worldwide. With a network of over 30,000 volunteers, DataKind has completed hundreds of projects, significantly increasing the technical capacity of the social sector to use data to drive real-world change.
