Lighthouse was an interactive AI smart home camera system designed to safeguard elderly parents and provide peace of mind for families. Using advanced 3D sensing and deep learning, Lighthouse went beyond traditional video monitoring by understanding the context of human movement. For elder care, it allowed children to set up specific "Pings"—automated notifications for events or absences. For instance, a user could request a ping if the camera didn't see anyone in the kitchen by 9:00 AM, or if the parent waved "hello" to the camera. It also featured a "Two-way Talk" function, allowing families to communicate directly through the device without the parent needing a smartphone. The AI could distinguish between residents, pets, and known caregivers, alerting families only when someone unrecognized entered the home. While the original Lighthouse company was acquired and the standalone service sunsetted, its technology remains a landmark in the use of ambient AI for "aging in place," proving that vision-based systems could provide 24/7 security without requiring the senior to wear a physical fall-detection device.
