Google Tree Canopy
AI mapping of urban forests to mitigate extreme heat.
About Google Tree Canopy
The Tree Canopy tool, part of Google's Environmental Insights Explorer (EIE), utilizes AI and high-resolution aerial imagery to help cities map their urban forests and measure tree coverage. By applying machine learning to aerial photos, the tool can identify where trees are located and calculate the percentage of canopy cover in specific neighborhoods. This data is used by city planners to understand the 'urban heat island' effect and prioritize reforestation efforts in underserved communities where tree density is low. Increasing urban tree cover helps reduce local temperatures, improve air quality, and enhance the overall health and climate resilience of cities.
