About Google Lookout

Google Lookout uses computer vision and generative AI to assist people with low vision or blindness in getting things done faster and more easily. Using a phone's camera, Lookout makes it easier to get more information about the world around you and do daily tasks more efficiently like reading text & documents, sorting mail, and putting away groceries. Built in collaboration with the blind and low-vision community, it supports Google's mission to make the world's information universally accessible. The app offers seven distinct modes. Text mode scans text and hears it read aloud. Documents mode captures whole pages of text or handwriting, available in over 30 languages. Explore mode identifies objects, people, and text in the surroundings. Currency mode identifies banknotes quickly for US Dollars, Euros, and Indian Rupees. Food labels mode identifies packaged foods by their labels or barcodes, available in over 20 countries. Find mode scans surroundings to find objects like doors, bathrooms, cups, or vehicles, providing direction and distance. Finally, Images mode allows users to capture, describe, and ask questions about an image using generative AI. It is available in more than 30 languages and runs on devices with Android 6 and above.
