About LoomieLive

LoomieLive was a free desktop application developed by Loom.ai (now part of Roblox) that allowed users to create and use personalized 3D avatars for video conferencing services like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet. The tool used artificial intelligence and computer vision to build a 3D character from a standard 2D selfie, which could then be customized with various hairstyles, accessories, and clothing. During a video call, the avatar would lip-sync in real-time based on the user's voice input, allowing the user to turn off their physical camera while still maintaining a visual presence. This was designed to reduce "Zoom fatigue" by diminishing the emotional strain of being under a constant spotlight and decoding non-verbal facial cues. The avatar could also be manually triggered to perform gestures such as laughing, waving, or giving a thumbs-up. Following its acquisition by Roblox in late 2020, the standalone LoomieLive service was sunsetted in early 2021 to integrate its facial animation technology into the Roblox metaverse, where it helps power expressive digital representations for millions of players.
